York eyed her skeptically. "The three of them play for sky-high stakes, where a million dollars is just the starting bet. Are you sure they were playing for ten bucks with you?"
"I might not win at cards, but I sure can do the math!" Claudia shot back, annoyed. "Don't look down on me."
Seeing her get defensive, York softened his tone. "I wasn't blaming you. I was just reminding you that it's nearly impossible for an average person to win against those three."
Claudia subtly pulled her hand away and followed him into the dining room. York had called her that morning, and she had fobbed him off, saying she'd be busy all day. She never expected him to show up unannounced. And seeing her with a house full of people playing cards, he hadn't even gotten angry. Something was off.
One woman and five men sat down for dinner. The atmosphere was lively.
Rock stood up to get Cyrus a drink. "Mr. Cyrus, drink as much as you like. Make yourself at home."
"Yes, Mr. Cyrus," Peter chimed in. "Come over often. Don't be a stranger."
York sat in his seat, watching Rock and Peter with a stony expression. Those two certainly didn't treat themselves like guests.
Noticing Eddy wasn't eating the fish, York reminded him, "Eddy, you're still growing. No picky eating."
Eddy shot him a sullen look and picked up a piece of pork instead.
York reined in his frustration. Ever since the misunderstanding between him and Claudia had started, Eddy, who used to listen to him, now treated him like an enemy, glaring at him every chance he got.
Peter gave York a sidelong glance. "Being a picky eater is a good thing. Only an animal eats whatever is put in front of it without question."
York and Peter locked eyes, a clear warning in York's gaze.
York turned back to Eddy. "After dinner, your sister and I will take you home and say hello to your parents."
"I know the way," Rock said, shaking his head. "I'll take Eddy home later."
