Claudia hid in the bathroom, completely dazed and at a loss. Her heart pounded with panic, but she didn't dare make a sound. She slumped by the toilet, feeling as helpless as a child.

York had plotted for her to get pregnant, undoubtedly to tie her to him with a child. A child born of such manipulation would only ever be a pawn. She couldn't give this child a complete and healthy family. It would be born into a life where it wasn't truly loved.

As innocent as the baby was, she couldn't bring it into this world. And more importantly, she couldn't let anyone know she was carrying York's child.

She had to find a way to terminate the pregnancy, and quickly.

A knock on the door jolted her back to reality. Claudia quickly composed herself and opened it.

Gideon noticed her pale complexion. "Are we working you too hard lately? Do you need a few days off?" he asked with concern.

Claudia forced a smile. "Thanks for asking, Gideon. I just didn't sleep well last night. I'm fine."

Gideon placed a file on her desk. "There's an expert symposium in Havenport at the end of the month. The hospital has three spots, and I was hoping you'd go for the learning experience. Would that work for you?"

The mention of a symposium in Havenport made Claudia's eyes light up. "Gideon, I'll go."

She was at most four weeks along, so she could easily wait until the end of the month. She could use the conference as a legitimate reason to go to Havenport, away from York's watchful eye. After the event, she could stay an extra day or two and have the abortion without anyone knowing.
