York looked at Claudia cautiously.

"I bought you your favorite beef pie," he said, holding out the breakfast bag.

Claudia glanced at him, took the bag, and then turned and tossed it into a nearby trash can.

York's face fell, but he bit back his protest.

"Is there anything else?" she asked.

York checked his watch. "Claudia, trust me. I only went to see her behind your back to sort things out. I didn't start that hug."

Claudia cut him off, her face a cold mask. "York, you two have a son together. What's the point of explaining any of this to me now?"

Their eyes met. Suddenly, York felt a wave of helplessness wash over him, as if all his energy and passion had been drained away in an instant.

"The child was conceived six years ago, before we were married," York said, trying to stabilize her emotions while concealing the truth about the boy's parentage. "I didn't even know he existed when I married you. Are you really going to end our marriage over a child?"

Claudia didn't yield an inch. "The child may have been from before our marriage, and maybe you didn't know when you married me. But what about after? What about since Ann came back with him? Have you two ever given it a rest?"

Her voice was cold and precise as she questioned him. "York, we've known each other for over twenty years. How have I ever wronged you that you feel the need to torture me like this?"

York shook his head frantically, forcing a pained smile. "I haven't. I never wanted to hurt you."

He just wanted to save their marriage.

Claudia looked him straight in the eye, her expression serious. "The only reason I'm still tolerating this is because you promised you wouldn't interfere with my work. If I can't even do my job, then I'll have nothing left to lose."

She pushed past him and walked away.
