"Grandfather, I'm the one who took Claudia to Grant Manor," York admitted, facing his family's fury. "I will personally bring her back in a few days, but not today."
He had made a promise to Claudia, and he intended to keep it. Besides, she was still angry. Even if he went, she wouldn't come back with him.
"Bastard!" Old Mr. Ferguson swung his cane, striking York hard on the shoulder.
York winced but didn't move to avoid the blow.
Laurinda quickly stepped in. "Dad, Brother, if York and Claudia agreed on this, you shouldn't interfere in their marriage."
"I've only just returned after so long," she added. "Please don't cause a scene. Let me have a few peaceful days at home."
At Laurinda's words, Old Mr. Ferguson finally relented.
After dinner, Laurinda pulled York aside in the garden.
"York, your parents told me everything about you and Claudia," she began. After a moment's hesitation, she said, "Don't think I'm overstepping, but I hope you and Claudia get a divorce."
York stared at her in disbelief. "Aunt Laurinda, you've always been so fond of Claudia. Why would you, of all people, tell us to separate?"
"Look, I'm telling you this because I really care about Claudia," Laurinda sighed. "You have a child with Ann, and you're tied to her for life. Claudia loves you so much. Can you imagine how much pain and humiliation she's had to swallow just to stay in this broken marriage with you?"
