"He's your son," Claudia said. "If I tried to stop you from going, It'd be totally out of line."

She pushed his hands away and prepared to get into bed.

York hesitated, then walked over to her and pulled her into his arms.

He gently kissed her forehead. "I'll be back soon."

The moment York left the bedroom, Claudia locked the door behind him.

Good. Maybe he wouldn't come back at all tonight. She could finally get a decent night's sleep.

The next morning, Claudia woke up in York's arms. She thought back, certain she had locked the door last night. After a few seconds of silence, she got out of bed to get ready.

Just before eight o'clock, Claudia was ready to leave for work.

York emerged from the kitchen. "I made you breakfast. After you eat, I'll drive you to the hospital."

Claudia frowned. "York, the fact that you made it yourself makes it even harder for me to eat."

York's expression slowly darkened.

"It really was Mark who called last night," he explained. "He couldn't handle it, that's the only reason I went out."

"It's not about whether you went out last night," Claudia cut in. "I don't want to eat anything you cook because every time I see it, I think of the blueberry cake you made for Ann. And the yacht, the flowers, the beach, that post declaring your love for her. You know me, York. Since we were kids, if something wasn't one-of-a-kind, if it wasn't made just for me, I never wanted it. Now that you've cooked for her, don't ever cook for me again. The thought of it honestly makes me sick."

York stared after her, completely stunned, as she walked out the door.
