Claudia was taken aback by Hugh's quick decision.
She just stared at him blankly.
Hugh explained, a bit awkwardly, "Dr. Watkins, in three years, you're the only person Hawley has ever willingly approached. While you were away these past few days, he spoke to me on his own for the first time, asking me to bring him to you. I was thinking..."
Before Hugh could finish, Claudia replied generously, "Mr. Ferguson, you don't need to explain. You're a wonderful father, and I understand. If it helps this little guy get better, then godmother it is."
Hugh noticed the faint sheen of sweat on Claudia's forehead and took the child from her. "I didn't realize you were so open-minded, Dr. Watkins. On behalf of Hawley, thank you."
Claudia didn't object.
As expected of a top lawyer, he had a way with words.
As they turned toward the hospital's main building, a voice called out to Claudia. It was York.
Claudia stopped and turned. York handed her a bag from a pharmacy. "I called, but you didn't answer, so I brought this over."
Claudia accepted the medication.
Hugh took the initiative to greet him. "Mr. Ferguson, you and Dr. Watkins are...?"
York's gaze, full of complex emotions, fell on Claudia. "We're married," he said.
Hugh looked puzzled. "Then the woman in the hospital room the other day was...?"
York explained, "I apologize, Mr. Ferguson. The child who injured your son is not my child. His mother and I are old acquaintances. I didn't clarify our relationship in the hospital room because I wanted to help resolve the situation as quickly as possible. I'm sorry for the misunderstanding."
Hugh nodded in understanding. "You're being too kind, Mr. Ferguson. As long as Dr. Watkins wasn't misled, that's all that matters."
Just as York was about to step closer to Claudia, she turned to Hugh. "Let's go, Mr. Ferguson."
Whether she had been misled or not was clearly insignificant in York's eyes. He was only explaining now because the situation had spiraled out of his control. He just wanted to placate her for the time being, to keep her from making too much of a scene.
