After Mark finished speaking, he stepped back.
York's expression remained unchanged as he said to Ann, "I have an urgent matter to deal with. You should go back for now. I'll think about your situation more carefully and give you an answer later."
Ann glanced hesitantly at the check on the desk. "York, you have to help me!"
After seeing York nod, Ann left the office in a state of panic.
Once she was gone, Mark locked the door and returned to the desk.
"Mr. Ferguson," Mark began, "after Thorne's death, the ski resort's official explanation was a sudden equipment malfunction on the ski run that wasn't repaired in time, and that a tourist had moved a warning sign, leading to the accident. The police investigation concluded that the run where Thorne died was missing proper warning lines and signs. They fined the resort, ordered it to shut down for rectification, and closed the case."
"According to our latest findings," Mark continued, "the employee responsible for Thorne's ski run was the brother-in-law of Miss James's ex-husband. His name is Virgil Stone."
York sat at his desk, elbows propped on the surface, his hands steepled against his forehead.
His muffled voice held a hint of danger. "Why did it take years to uncover such a crucial lead?"
Mark braced himself and explained, "Mr. Ferguson, when this Virgil was with Miss James's ex-husband's sister, neither of them was of legal age, so they never married. By the time of Thorne's accident, both of them had married other people, had children, and were living in different cities. That's why the connection was overlooked."
Mark added, "Mr. Ferguson, Thorne's case is closed. It happened in another country, so long ago, and Miss James is already back here. We can't yet be certain that Thorne's death is directly linked to her."
York slowly rose to his feet. "Keep digging," he said.
Years ago, his grandfather had threatened both him and Ann. If York insisted on being with her, he would be cut off without a penny, and the Ferguson inheritance would go to his half-brother, Thorne.
