Claudia set her bag down. "Misunderstand what? The way you were clutching each other's hands while you were 'discussing' things?"

Seated at his table, York unconsciously clenched his fists.

Ann deliberately stammered an explanation. "Dr. Watkins, must you be so unpleasant?"

Hawley tugged on Claudia's hand, urging her to sit. "Mommy."

Ann's gaze shifted from the child to Hugh. "You're not even divorced from York, yet here you are, openly dining with another man and his child, even playing mother. Have you ever considered York's feelings?"

Ann sighed dramatically, lecturing Claudia with a straight face. "It's a Ferguson family tradition. You haven't married into the family yet, so you don't understand our ways. I don't blame you."

Claudia's retort nearly gave Ann a heart attack.

Claudia glanced over her shoulder at York. She reached out and pulled him to his feet. "York, why don't you explain to your little girlfriend your experience with painless fatherhood?"

York's complicated gaze was fixed on Claudia's face. He took the opportunity to grab her hand. "Don't say things you don't mean. Just have a nice lunch. I have to go."

He gave Hugh a polite nod, glanced at Ann, and turned to leave.
