There was a time, indeed, when she had seen York as her only support, her lifeline.
Thankfully, she had woken up.
Ann pointed a trembling finger at Claudia, her composure cracking. "Stop pretending! You just can't bear to divorce York. You can't let go of the Ferguson family's power and status!"
Standing in the light rain, Ann’s voice broke, her eyes red with tears. "If you really wanted to be done with him, you would have left the country and never come back! You're just stringing him along, hoping he'll come back to you, hoping he'll regret everything and return to his family, to you!"
Claudia stood silently under her umbrella.
When Ann had finally vented all her fury, Claudia spoke with exceptional calm. "I grew up in Capital City. My family and friends are here, my classmates, my career. The old alley with my favorite breakfast spot is here, the barbecue restaurant, my alma mater… This city holds more than twenty years of my life. It's my home."
"Why," Claudia continued, "should I abandon everything I have, leave my home and move to a foreign country, all because of a man who betrayed me?"
Ann retorted, "Claudia, you've studied psychology. Under normal circumstances, if a woman truly wants a divorce, she'll do everything she can to leave, to give everything up. If you really wanted out, you'd be willing to go!"
Claudia couldn't help but curve her lips into a small smile. "But I'm not a normal woman."
She looked Ann straight in the eye. "To give up everything and flee the country for a scumbag isn't solving a problem. It's an excuse. It's escapism. It's punishing yourself for someone else's mistake. It's taking yourself out of the game."
"I haven't wronged anyone," Claudia stated. "The one who should be out is not me."
With a final glance at the pathetic, broken woman before her, Claudia turned away with cold indifference.
You get up from where you fall.
She was going to live a brilliant life, a happier one.
And even if they were within arm's reach, the people who had hurt her would never get close enough to affect her again.
