"York is fighting against all this pressure to avoid divorcing you," he said to Claudia. "Do you think part of it is because he can't bear to lose you?"

Peter glanced at her. "You've loved him for so many years. Are you sure you want to give up?"

Claudia didn't speak, but her firm nod was answer enough. "I regret loving him. I regret marrying him. I dream of divorcing him."

"Claudia, I know you're hurting," he said gently. "Talk to me. Don't keep everything bottled up."

She turned to face him, her eyes still very red. She managed a difficult smile. "Peter, since I was a little girl, I knew there were good people and bad people in the world. But I never imagined that the person who would be the cruelest to me would be the person I loved the most."

Peter's heart ached for her, but all he could do was sigh helplessly.

"I used to build my whole life around him," she said. “I put him first so much that I lost myself. Looking back now, I didn't even get basic respect in my marriage to York. What a joke, expecting him to be loyal."
