"Besides, Ann isn't that kind of person. I trust her. She promised me that once she's recovered, she'll let me help find a school for the boy somewhere far away, so they won't disturb my life with Claudia."

Peter shot that down mercilessly. "York, you're not bound by some moral code. There were a million ways to make it up to her, yet you picked the one that hurts everyone. I get that you still care for Ann and blame your grandfather for tearing you apart. But what I can't understand is why you're doing this to Claudia."

Peter continued, "If Claudia has any fault, it's that she loves you too damn much. If you're not over Ann, then let Claudia go and go be a step-dad to someone else's kid."

York stated flatly, "I'm going to help Ann James and her son, no matter what. And I'm not getting a divorce."

Peter urged, "York, don't take this the wrong way, but you should just divorce her. I feel sorry just looking at that girl."

York glanced up at him. "She's my wife. She doesn't need your pity."

Peter threw up his hands. "Dude, don't be so arrogant. Claudia saw you as her salvation, and you're dragging her to hell. She's going to leave you sooner or later."

York tilted his head back and took a long pull of his drink. "She's only acting out like this because she was provoked by what I said. She's loved me for too many years. She won't actually have the heart to leave me."

Peter stared at him like he'd just seen a ghost. "What could she possibly not have the heart to leave?"

"The fact that you lie about business trips so you can go be with your precious Ann and her son?"

"Or that you gave your wife the exact same anniversary gift you gave Ann?"

"How about the fact that you, a married man, don't come home at night?"

"Or that you abandoned your sick wife to play the devoted husband at another woman's bedside?"

"Or are you saying she can't bear to leave you while you're playing daddy to another man's kid and spending your joint assets to buy your old flame a luxury house, a car, a driver, and a staff?"
