Ann nodded repeatedly, crying. "I know, York, I know. My son and I have been a burden to you."
"Don't say that," York said, his words deliberate. "I owe you this. But I'll say it again: do not appear in front of my wife without my permission."
Ann nodded again. "Don't worry, York. I'll do whatever you say."
Changing the subject, she probed, "York, since you've arranged for a fake paternity test and your family has accepted the child, could you add him to your household registration? It would make school enrollment easier and also dispel any lingering suspicions from your family."
York's expression turned serious. "Ann, I may feel guilty, but I am not without principles."
Frustrated, York turned and walked away.
Ann followed him to his car, watching as he got in and drove off without a backward glance.
"His wife was already at her limit with him, yet he still wouldn't agree to a divorce," Ann noted to herself. Their ties must run deeper than she'd imagined.
Six years ago, when they were together, she had made advances several times, but York had never crossed that final line with her.
Since her return, she had tested his boundaries again, and he remained just as resolute.
She had been gone for six years and had a son with her ex-husband. It was only natural that York's feelings for her had faded.
And yet, on the day she returned, a single phone call had made him abandon his wife and spend a month caring for her and her son without once going home.
He had granted her every request these past few days.
She could feel that he still had feelings for her.
But until York was divorced, she couldn't reveal her true intentions. She had to play the long game, using the child as leverage.
As long as she didn't give up, York would eventually come back to her.
Ann plotted silently.
