York closed the door to the break room and left.
At the hospital entrance, he ran into Ann again.
She explained that her doctor had warned her about a potential relapse of her depression and that she had an appointment for a psychological evaluation that afternoon.
Noticing the lunchbox in York's hand, Ann ventured, "York, have you eaten yet? Maybe we could go to that restaurant near the university. I haven't been there in years, and I kind of miss it."
York was clearly distracted. "Some other time. I have things to do this afternoon."
As York walked away, Ann forced herself not to stop him.
She had noticed a distinct coolness from him over the past few days.
Her reappearance had obviously created a crisis in his marriage.
York was the heir to the Ferguson Group, and his marriage was public knowledge. For the sake of his family and the company, he couldn't afford the scandal of a divorce caused by an affair.
Fortunately, she had been prepared. The moment they reconnected, she had used his guilt to make him promise he would take responsibility for her and their son.
She had no doubts about York's character.
He wouldn't make a promise lightly, but once he did, he would see it through.
She had barely done anything yet, and his wife was already demanding a divorce.
Once her son started school and she was settled in Capital City, she would have plenty more excuses to ask York for help.
She didn't believe that woman, Claudia Watkins, could endure it.
"Excuse me, are you Miss Ann James?" A polite voice pulled Ann from her thoughts.
