In the hospital room, Ann quickly deleted the contents of the recording pen.

She carefully wrapped it in a tissue and threw it in the trash.

York probably hadn't had a chance to listen to it and discover she'd taken sixty million from his grandfather six years ago. Otherwise, he wouldn't have rushed over in such a panic and left without asking a single question.

It seemed the quiet ones were the most dangerous. She had underestimated that old woman, Wendy.

Early the next morning, York went to the hospital at the time Claudia usually started her shift, only to learn she had gone to Cresthaven City for a week-long academic exchange and wouldn't be back until the following week.

She was gone for a week for a professional conference and hadn't even bothered to tell him.

A tightness formed in York's chest.

After a moment's hesitation, he decided to stop by the hospital room to check on Ann and her son.

He pushed open the door to find the boy sleeping fitfully while Ann was slumped over the edge of the bed, holding his small hand.

York didn't go in.

As he walked away, York called his assistant, Mark. "Cancel all my appointments for the next few days. Move up my business trip to Cresthaven City to this morning. Let me know when you're ready."

Back in the room, Ann peeked out the door, waiting until York was gone before slipping into the hallway.

Why would York suddenly cancel everything and go to Cresthaven City?

As she was lost in thought, Ann spotted one of Claudia's colleagues—the same young woman who was with Claudia the day Ann had gone to see her.

Ann stopped her. "Hello, excuse me. Is Dr. Watkins in today? I need to see her about something."

The colleague replied, "Dr. Watkins went to Cresthaven City for a conference. She won't be back until next week."

After the woman left, Ann twisted her hands together tightly.
