When Noelle heard Wyatt's question, she was equally curious. Donovan protected Xenia so much. Even after knowing about her kickbacks from the foundation, he was still willing to clean up her mess.
Could it be that Donovan liked Xenia, too? The question lingered in the air, and the entire hall fell into silence.
Xenia gawked at Donovan in disbelief. She'd never thought about it that way. Donovan was rarely home, after all, and he was much older than she was. That idea had never crossed her mind.
But if Donovan did like her, that'd certainly be better than Wyatt.
Donovan immediately reprimanded Wyatt. "What nonsense are you sprouting? I've always seen Xenia as my younger sister.
"Do you think I'm like you? Someone who gets his hands on his younger sister?"
Donovan was furious at Wyatt's words. To say he liked Xenia was a ridiculous claim. There was a reason he protected her, but it definitely wasn't because he liked her. He wasn't that desperate.
Wyatt grew mad. "But Xenia isn't our biological sister."
"I handled her adoption paperwork, and she's legally our sister now. That means you two can't get married or register as a couple."
Noelle had never considered that, but it made sense. Though Xenia and Wyatt weren't blood-related, the law still prohibited their marriage.
Wyatt froze and confusedly asked, "Is that true?"
Xenia quickly chimed in, "I think that's how the law works."
She let out a quiet sigh of relief. Truthfully, she'd never wanted to marry Wyatt, but she had to agree for now to resolve the current situation. She'd always know that she and Wyatt couldn't legally register their marriage, but she'd kept quiet and pretended not to know.
Now, Donovan finally spoke about it. Wyatt held her hand tightly. "Don't worry. I promised to marry you, and I'll take full responsibility.
"Tomorrow, we'll start the process to dissolve the adoption and remove your identity as a Liddell. That way, we can get married."
There was definitely something else going on, but Donovan couldn't outright expose it either.
Meanwhile, Noelle enjoyed the drama from the side. "Just agree already, Donovan. Xenia will be more closely tied to the Liddells; isn't that great?"
"I know you hate and want to kick me out, Noelle. But if I annul my adoption less than a year after being taken in, how will I face the world if words get out?"
Xenia felt incredibly uneasy. She really didn't want Donovan to agree.
Wyatt reassured her. "Don't worry, Xenia. We can move to another city where no one knows us. That way, people won't gossip."
Xenia was resistant to the idea. She wanted to stay in Yasnia, and there was no way she'd like to hide in a small town.
Noelle smirked. "That actually sounds like a great idea. After splitting up the family assets, Wyatt can take his share and start a new life somewhere else. He'll live quite comfortably."
