Chapter 14
Isabella’s preschool got a new teacher.
Dark hair, dark eyes, tall and good–looking–but cold as ice and totally unapproachable,
All the kids were curious about him, but this teacher seemed to only have eyes for one student: Isabella.
Isabella blinked
him with those big eyes. “I know you. You’re the guy who made
e my mom upset the other day.”
Trevor crouched down to her level, keeping his voice carefully controlled. ‘Did your mom… did she say anything bad about me?”
“My mom doesn’t talk trash about people. She says that’s not nice! And she never mentioned you anyway. I have no idea who you are.”
Hearing Isabella say that hit Trevor like a punch to the got.
Talia must still hate him. That’s why she never brought him up around the kid.
“Your mom and I… we used to know each other. We were really close once, but I screwed up and disappointed her.”
“Isabella, can you tell me what your mom likes? I want her to forgive me. Think you could help me out?
Trevor tried to coax information out of her, but Isabella was way smarter than he’d expected. Im not telling you anything! You’re a stranger, and you can’t trick me!”
She immediately covered her ears and spun around, looking absolutely adorable.
It reminded Trevor instantly of Talis. Back in the day, when he’d piss her off, she’d do the exact same thing–cover her ears and say she didn’t
want to hear his voice
But a little sweet–talking always brought her around.
She never held grudges. But somehow, he’d managed to push her so far that she’d been gone for five whole years.
“Okay, I won’t ask about that. Isabella, can you tell me about that man from the other day? What’s his deal with
ith your mom?”
At that. Isabella turned back around, her little voice full of certainty. “He’s my daddy!”
“That’s impossible.”
Trevor’s face went stone cold.
“Linte kids shouldn’t lie, or the police will come and take you away.”
He only meant to scare her a little, but his tone was too harsh. Isabella burst into tears
“Uncle Luigi 15 my daddy! I love him and he loves my mommy! He 15 my daddy! You’re a big liar! Waahhh…
Trevor panicked. He had zero experience with crying kids and fumbled around trying to wipe her tears and nose, making everything worse.
Isabella’s face was bright red from crying.
Trevor tried to soften his voice, practically squeaking, “Tin sorry, Isabella. I’m really sorry. Please don’t cry, okay?”
He pulled her into a hug, trying to calm her down. Just his luck–it was pickup time.
Parents were arriving to collect their kids, and Talia showed up right on schedule. So this was exactly what she walked into.
“Trevor, what the hell are you doing?!”

She stormed over, shoved Trevor away, and pulled Isabella protectively into her arins.
“If you’ve got a problem, take it up with me! She’s just a
Her voice was shaking–with rage and feat.
Trevor stood up slowly, looking down at her with something almost like hurt in his usually cold eyes.
“Talia, is that really what you think of me?”
would never hurt her. Never.”
“Because she’s your daughter, and she’s also-”
“She’s MT daughter,” Talia cut him off. “Mine and mine alone!”
With that, she clutched Isabella tight and practically n out of there, like she was fleeing from a monster.
Trevor in
just stood there watching her disappear, then looked down at his fingers.
A single strand of hair was wrapped around one of them. Isabella’s hair.
Chapter 15
The whole drive home, Talia’s hands were shaking on the steering wheel.
Nobody–and she meant “nobody–was taking Isabella away from her.
Not even her biological father Trevor Kence.
Over her dead body.
She was still in a state of collapse by the time she pulled into her driveway.
As she helped Isabella out of the car, Luigi came out of his place. One look at her face and he knew something was seriously wrong.
wing on? I
“Hey, what’s going on? Is everthing ok?”
Talia’s voice came out all shaky. I think… I need to pull Isabella out of that school, Maybe we should move. Again.”
“Move?” Luigi’s face darkened. That bastard Trevor?”
“He was at Isabella’s school today. I found him holding her and talked to her while she was crying, and 1 just–Talia’s voice cracked. I don’t know what game he’s playing, but I can’t risk it.”
The fear in her voice was raw, desperate. This was her worst nightmare–Trevor getting his claws into Isabella.
Luigi stepped closer, his voice steady and protective. “You don’t have to run from him again, Talia. If you want him gone, I’ll make sure he
leaves you both alone.”
“No.” Talla took a shaky breath, trying to pull herself together. “Thanks, but I need to handle this myself. I can’t keep running forever. He was the one who should run away.
The next day, she called Trevor. Her hands were trembling as she dialed, but she forced herself to do it
Trevor picked up on the first ring, and she could hear the hope in his voice. “Talia? You’re calling me?”
“We need to talk. Meet me at Cafe Milano in an hour.”
Trevor was already there when she arrived, sitting at a comer table with a stack of papers in front of him. The moment she sat down, he started pushing documents across the table like he was closing a business deal.
“What’s all this?” she asked, staring at the paperwork.
“I bought three houses here in Crema–all in your name. And there’s a bank account with five hundred million dollars. It’s all yours.”
His eyes were bright with desperate hope. “Please, Talia. Just take it. Don’t say no this time.”
This completely caught her off guard. She’d come here with a speech prepared, and now went right out the window.
“Are you out of your damn mind? What is this supposed to be?”
Trevor slid another document toward her, this one looking more official.
“I had
some tests done. Isabella is definitely mine. And you’re single–you and Luigi are just neighbors, right?”
Talia’s blood went ice cold. She’d known this day would come, but Jesus, he worked fast.
“So what?” Her voice came out harder than she’d intended.
“Even if the is, even if we are so what?”
