Eleanor leaned over and began placing sensors on the monkey's body. Focused on the screen beside her, she didn't notice the monkey's eyes suddenly flicker open. By the time she realized what was happening, the monkey had already clawed her arm, leaving several deep, bleeding scratches.
Blood instantly soaked the sleeve of her white lab coat, startling Ryan and Callie who were standing nearby. They reacted instantly, pinning down the under-anesthetized monkey to prevent it from causing further harm.
Fortunately, the anesthetic took full effect again shortly after, and the monkey lost its aggression. Callie returned it to its cage.
Ryan quickly rushed out of the lab and returned moments later with a first-aid kit.
"Dr. Sutton, you need a tetanus shot and a rabies vaccine immediately," Ryan said.
Fighting through the pain, Eleanor took off her lab coat and rolled up her sleeve. Severe scratches covered the middle of her forearm, blood streaming from the wounds.
"I'll bandage it for now, and then we need to get you to a hospital as soon as possible," Ryan said as he worked.
Eleanor nodded, beads of sweat forming on her forehead from the pain.
Callie dialed for emergency services. "An ambulance is on its way."
As Eleanor was being loaded into the ambulance, Gwenda and Callie climbed in with her. Callie, remembering something, quickly sent a text message.
Eleanor was taken to the hospital's emergency room. While a doctor was cleaning her wounds, a figure hurried in—it was Ian.
He had clearly come straight from an important meeting, his suit jacket clutched in his hand, his handsome face tense, and his breathing unsteady.
