*So, is that a yes?*
Selma's reply came back: *A yes to what?*
*A yes to being my girlfriend,* Henry typed, holding his breath as he hit send.
One minute passed. Two. Three. No reply. He dialed her number.
"Hello?" Selma's voice came through the line.
"Selma," Henry's voice was hoarse with emotion. "I... I like you. Will you be my girlfriend?"
"Henry, it's almost two in the morning. Are you drunk? Did you mistake me for someone else again?" Selma asked, her tone serious.
Henry's mind went blank, flashing back to that night when he had mistaken her for Vanessa. "No, Selma, I'm not mistaken," he said, his voice urgent and sincere. "I'm telling you, I like you. You, Selma Quigley. I am officially and seriously asking you to be my girlfriend."
A laugh escaped from the other end of the line. Finally, with a mix of amusement and exasperation, she said, "I've never had someone confess their feelings in the middle of the night. Let's talk about this tomorrow."
"Selma—" Henry pleaded, his heart sinking.
But she didn't hang up. A smile in her voice, she said, "I prefer a more official proposal. Good night."
"Okay, you wait. I'll prepare a proper proposal for you. Good night."
A soft laugh, and then she hung up.
Henry was ecstatic. Just then, his assistant pulled up. He saw his boss's face, beaming with an excitement that outshone a lottery win. "Mr. Holt, get in."
She went back to the underground parking garage and took the elevator up to the twenty-seventh floor. Ian had indeed been under a lot of pressure lately—intense work, giving blood, and now a cold. It was a dangerous combination.
She stood at his door, took a deep breath, and rang the doorbell.
No response.
She pressed it again, more forcefully, several times. Just as she was about to give up, she heard the sound of the door unlocking from inside.
The door swung open.
Ian stood there, clearly just out of the shower. His hair was damp, and he had a dark bathrobe loosely tied around his waist, revealing a glimpse of his chest. The silver in his hair seemed more pronounced, and his face was flushed with an unhealthy red.
He looked surprised to see her. "What are you doing here?" His voice was hoarse.
