No Second Chances Ex-husband (Lauren and Ethan) novel Chapter 125

CHAPTER 0125

ROMAN’S POV

Seriously?Jeff said, his voice dripping with disbelief, his brows furrowing as his face twisted into the same shock I had worn when I first found out myself.

Yes,I replied calmly, leaning back in my chair. I was just as surprised.

He blinked a few times, trying to process the words. And she’s working here, for you?

Is there a problem with that?I countered, my tone even though I already knew where his mind was heading.

Jeff leaned forward slightly, resting his elbows on his knees. Roman, you know how Ethan can be,he began, his voice lowering like he was about to drop a heavy truth. I’m sure he can go to any lengths possible to bring down your company. What if she’s still working with him? What if he sent her here to get more information, to sabotage everything you’ve built?

I paused for a moment, watching the intensity in his eyes. The thought was absurd, ridiculous even, and yet he said it with such seriousness that I couldn’t help but let out a small laugh.

So Ethan has been planning this for five years?I asked, sarcasm thick in my tone.

What do you mean?Jeff asked, looking genuinely confused.

They got divorced over five years ago,I explained slowly, as though I was breaking down a simple equation. There’s no way Ethan had the brains to come up with a stunt like that. And besides, if what you’re suggesting were true, then why did she revive my Italy branch? If she was plotting with Ethan, she should have burnt it to the ground years ago.

Jeff fell silent, his expression thoughtful now instead of suspicious. He leaned back in his chair, crossing his arms over his chest. I could practically hear the gears turning in his head as he considered what I said.

Wellhe finally muttered. I guess you have a point.

Yes,I said, returning my focus to the papers on my desk, flipping through them absentmindedly. So calm your horses, alright?

A few seconds of quiet passed before he spoke again, his voice cutting through the stillness. Still, something doesn’t add up.

I let out a small sigh and looked back at him. It was clear he wasn’t going to drop this anytime soon. What doesn’t add up?I asked, placing the papers back on the desk.

Well,he said slowly, you said Ethan is the father of her child, right?

Yeah,I replied, nodding slightly.

“And you also said they divorced five years ago?

Yeah.

1/3

I nodded once. You’re going to find out what you can about her past. There’s something she didn’t tell me about her child, and it’s got me very curious to find out what that is, hopefully it’s not what I am thinking.

Jeff leaned back, crossing his arms with that teasing grin of his. You’ve never asked me to dig into a woman’s background before. It’s always business partners or clients. So, Lauren’s the first, huh? I can see you’re really curious this time.
