No Second Chances Ex-husband (Lauren and Ethan) novel Chapter 138

CASSANDRA’S POV

She opened the front door, and I stepped inside, my heels clicking softly against the floor. The moment I entered everything about the house screamed wealth. The lights above, the wide staircase that spiraled upward like something out of a movie

A maid hurried over immediately, bowing slightly as she reached out to take our bags. I didn’t even try to hide the smirk forming on my face. She was small, timidlooking, her hair neatly tied into a bun. She probably thought she was being polite, but to me, it felt like power my power, for once.

I’ve always been the one taking bags, fetching coffee, arranging other people’s things. Always the one standing on the other side of wealth, watching people like this maid serve women like Lauren, the ones who always had everything. But now? Now ! was the one handing my bag over. And it felt good. No, it felt right.

Just have a seat there,Sophia said, motioning toward the couch. Her tone was casual, but confident like she was perfectly comfortable commanding people.

I nodded and walked toward the soft, creamcolored sofa, letting my fingers glide across the smooth leather before sitting, I felt like I was sinking into the clouds.

My maid will get you whatever you’d like to have until my husband comes down, she added, her tone clipped, as if she was used to having people wait for Ethan Black. Then, without another word, she began climbing the stairs, her long, elegant steps making the softest sounds against the floor

For a second, I just sat there, looking around. The entire living room was spotless too spotless, really. Even the decorative vases glistened under the light. It was the kind of perfection that could only be achieved with money. Lots of it.

The maid, the same one who had taken my bag, came back and gave me a small bow before speaking.

What would you like to have, ma’am?

That word ma’amdid something to me. It made my shoulders rise a little higher, my chin tilted up. For once, someone was treating me like the kind of person I’d always dreamed of being.

Just get me a glass of juice and a sandwich,I said, making sure my voice carried authority. I wasn’t going to sound meek or unsure not here, not today. If I was going to sit in this luxurious living room, then I was going to act like I belonged here.

Yes, ma’am,the maid said before disappearing into the kitchen.

I leaned back, crossing one leg over the other, my eyes wandering around the room. The art on the wall probably cost more than my entire yearly salary. Even the throw pillows looked custommade. For a brief second, I imagined what it would feel like to live here, to wake up every morning and not have to worry about bills, to have people waiting on me instead of the other way

around.

A few minutes later, the maid returned with a small tray. She set it gently on the coffee table before me, placing the glass of juice and sandwich down with the kind of care that made me feel even more important. I picked up the glass, but before I could take a sip, I heard footsteps coming down the stairs.

They were heavy, confident. The kind of footsteps that announced authority before the person even appeared.

I turned toward the stairs, and there he was Ethan Black.

They descended together like they were starring in some kind of highsociety television show. They both carried an air of wealth and control that filled the room. Ethan wore a shirt, sleeves rolled halfway up his arms, his expensive watch glinting under the light. Sophia walked beside him with the calm assurance of a woman who knew her worth.

For a fleeting second, I felt something twist in my chest jealousy. Not of her beauty, though she was beautiful. But of her life. Her comfort. Her security.

I couldn’t stop the thought that followed How could Lauren ever have walken away from this man? Whatever reanne stu hut. they couldn’t have been good enough. No woman in het right mind would tease a man like Bihan Bhark

Cassandra, right?Ethan sand, his deep voice pulling me out of the thoughts

Yes,I said quickly, standing up as he extended his hand for a handshake. His grip was firm, controlled The leftief and handshake that told you he was used to getting his way.

I waited until they both sat before taking my own seat again, trying to keep my posture straight and composed even though my palms had started to sweat a little.

Alright,Ethan began, leaning slightly forward, his elbows resting on his knees. You’re probably wondering why I asked you to come here, right?

Yes, very much,I admitted, keeping my tone polite even as curiosity buzzed through me.

I’m a busy guy, so I’ll go straight to the point,he said. His directness made my stomach tighten I wasn’t sure if that was a good thing or not.

My wife’s told me that you two have been talking for the past few weeks. Allies, I think is the word she used,he said with a Jamt smirk. And she mentioned you’ve been complaining that you’re being treated like crap at your workplace.

I glanced at Sophia, then back at him. Wellyeah,I said cautiously. I didn’t know where he was going with this, but I wasn’t about to deny it either.

Hmm,he nodded slowly, his expression unreadable. I’m sure Sofia asked you something back at the café, didn’t she? Something about making your own choice?

Yes, she did,I said. ButI don’t really understand what she meant by that.

He leaned back against the couch, his gaze locked on mine. It’s simple,he said, voice smooth and calm. Instead of letting yourself be treated like garbage at that rundown company, why don’t you come work for me?
