In this chapter, Beckett, trying to lighten the mood, pulls out a small pill from his bag, claiming it cures hangovers and offers it to others after joking about his ability to drink large amounts of white wine. However, Aunt immediately scolds him for his irresponsible behavior and wasting valuable wine, which causes Beckett to quickly back down and put the pills away, agreeing that drinking too much wine is unhealthy.
Meanwhile, Tyrell is determined to prove himself despite feeling down from a recent breakup. He challenges the group to drink with him, focusing his attention on Emmett, whose muscular appearance seems to tempt him. After several drinks, Emmett reluctantly joins Tyrell in a toast to Tyrell’s grandfather, Frankie. Tyrell apologizes for his disappointment about not marrying into the family and expresses hope about still being welcomed at the McDowell house.
Grandpa Frankie responds warmly, joking that if he still had a granddaughter, he would marry her off to Tyrell, praising him as an exceptional young man. This comment causes a noticeable reaction from Aunt, who looks uneasy. Sensing the tension, the narrator presses Grandpa about the remark, noting that Dad only has her as a daughter and expressing a wish for a cousin to keep her company, highlighting the underlying family dynamics and unspoken feelings in the scene.
Chapter 434
Beckett suddenly spun around and pulled a small pill from his bag. “Well, since I’m a doctor, I might have to bend the rules when facing a tough opponent,” he said with a sly grin. “I need to take this pill. Drinking five kilograms of white wine is like sipping water for me because this little thing cures hangovers. Want one each?”
I stood there, utterly bewildered by his unexpected offer.
Aunt shot him a sharp look. “Beckett, as a so-called doctor, what kind of nonsense are you researching? Is it fun to gulp down alcohol just because you can pop a hangover pill afterwards? And wasting such precious white wine—don’t you know how much a bottle like that is worth? Tens of thousands! Take your useless pills and get lost!”
Her words hit Beckett hard. He quickly shoved the pills back into his bag, his smile fading into a sheepish grin. “Alright, alright. Eating vegetables is better anyway. No need to drink too much white wine—it’s bad for your health!”
But Tyrell wasn’t ready to give up. He seemed determined to prove himself, as if my refusal today was a personal challenge to bring him back to the bar to pick on Emmett again.
He glanced around, eyes locking onto Emmett’s tall, muscular frame. The tight black shirt clung to Emmett’s eight-pack abs, clearly tempting Tyrell. Swallowing hard, Tyrell raised his glass once more, issuing another challenge.
“Come on, I’ve been feeling down today because of a breakup. Let’s all drink with me. After this round, we’ll toast to Frankie and Anika together.”
I couldn’t help but think silently, Poor guy. Can’t fight, can’t drink—he must be feeling pretty defeated, especially since I didn’t even give him the courtesy of a friendly face today.
