Once a Doormat Now Untouchable (Caleb and Sydney) novel Chapter 251

Chapter 251

“They just reported that Ms. Wilson hasn’t left at all.” Peter’s voice carried a bite of irritation. “Mr. Sterling, do you think Ms. Wilson has gone soft over love again?”

Elliot wished he could mute him on the spot. Why did Peter always have to talk?

Julian’s lips curved. “Call her.”

“Huh?” Peter blinked, pointing at himself. “Me?”

That couldn’t be right. She was Ms. Wilson-his superior.

At the side, Elliot had already pulled out his phone. “I’ll call her right now.”

“Speakerphone,” Julian said.

Sydney never kept her ringer loud. Combined with how deeply she slept, the sound barely stirred her. She thought she heard something, but her eyelids refused to lift. She didn’t know someone else was already inside the locked room.

Caleb slipped the key into his pocket. Afraid the vibrations would wake her, he walked to the bed in silence. As he reached for the phone to stop the sound, his eyes caught the caller ID.

It was Elliot.

Caleb knew the man worked under Julian. With Julian’s reach, news of last night’s incident had probably already reached him overseas.

Caleb stepped out onto the balcony and answered. “Hello, this is Caleb. Tell Julian not to worry. Sydney is fine.”

On the other end, Julian’s eyes hardened. His lips twisted with faint self-mockery.

Elliot froze. He had expected the call to clear up the misunderstanding about those photos. But Caleb-of all people-had answered.

“Mr. Hampton, where is Ms. Wilson? Why are you picking up her phone?”

“She just fell asleep.” Caleb glanced back at the young woman curled beneath the covers. Her breathing was even, her face peaceful. Relief spread quietly through his chest.

Elliot caught the flicker of shadow in Julian’s eyes. He clenched his jaw. “Next time, please don’t answer Ms. Wilson’s phone.”

He hung up before Caleb could reply.

The abrupt end left Caleb staring for a moment. Then he let it go. After returning the phone to its place, he hesitated, deleted the call log, and sat at the bedside.

He studied Sydney’s sleeping face. His chest tightened until the ache reached his eyes. He wanted to touch and hold her close but didn’t dare wake her. His fingers brushed a strand of her black hair, winding it gently around his hand.

He hadn’t slept all night, yet he felt no fatigue. Watching her like this, he knew he could never look enough. At

least he had found her. He would make things right. He would never let her slip away again.

Caleb didn’t know how long he sat there before his phone buzzed in his pocket. Rising carefully, he stepped out

to answer.

“Mr. Hampton, we searched the area. Still no sign of those kidnappers from last night,” Gordon reported.

It was strange. Once they left the industrial zone, they had vanished.

Caleb’s tone grew heavy. “That scarred man said there was a bomb in the factory. What about it?”
