Chapter 342

As the white sedan glided out of the parking lot, Sydney settled into the car, her mind still swirling with thoughts. It was only then that James felt ready to make his own exit. He turned the key in the ignition, the engine rumbling to life, but just as he was about to pull away, a sharp rap on his window interrupted him.

With a slight frown, he rolled down the glass, peering out to see Raymond standing there, an inquisitive look on his face. “Is the hospital work so relaxed now? Off duty at this hour?” James quipped, a hint of sarcasm lacing his words.

Raymond chuckled softly, but deep down, he felt the weight of his family’s expectations. They had allowed him to pursue a career in medicine, but he sensed their disapproval lurking just beneath the surface. With a practiced smile that masked his inner conflict, he replied, “Bro, did you just have dinner with Sydney?”

It was a question that hung in the air, obvious yet charged with unspoken implications.

James tapped his fingers rhythmically against the steering wheel, his gaze fixed ahead. “Weren’t you and Julian watching from upstairs the whole time?” His words were casual, but there was a keen awareness in his tone.

Sydney had been so engrossed in that file that she hadn’t noticed the scrutiny, but James had certainly taken note of their clandestine observations.

Raymond’s brow furrowed slightly, a flicker of embarrassment crossing his face, but he didn’t back down. Instead, he leaned against the car, his posture relaxed, as he shifted the conversation. “So what did Sydney talk to you about?”

James remained silent for a moment, his expression unreadable. “Who told you to pry into gossip?” he shot back, his eyes narrowing slightly as he gauged Raymond’s intentions.

He could see right through Raymond and Julian’s little game, their curiosity as transparent as glass.

Raymond felt no remorse for his actions. With a casual shrug, he leaned closer, a conspiratorial glint in his eye. “Who else could it be?” he said, throwing Julian under the proverbial bus without a second thought.

“Project matters,” James replied coolly, his tone shifting as he instinctively shielded Sydney’s privacy.

Then, with a hint of seriousness, he added, “You’ve stopped seeing that Voss girl, right? Diana will be coming to Jouleston in a few days. Don’t go looking for trouble.”

Raymond felt a tingle of apprehension race up his spine at the mention of Diana Hutton. “Got it,” he replied, his voice steady, though the weight of the Hutton family legacy loomed large in his mind.
