Caleb’s voice carried a subtle note of exasperation as he looked at Sydney, his brow slightly furrowed. “Can’t you even accept a cake that a friend brought over? Is it really that hard?”
Sydney, feeling the weight of his words, sighed but ultimately relented, gripping the glass bottle tightly in one hand while she retrieved the paper bag with the other. “Fine,” she conceded, a reluctant smile creeping onto her lips. “Then I’ll thank you on Tiffany’s behalf too. She might appreciate it more than I do.”
Once Caleb departed, Tiffany sauntered over, her curious gaze sweeping over the items Sydney held.
“Tsk, tsk. Let me just say this,” Tiffany began, her tone teasing yet insightful. “Caleb’s emotional intelligence is definitely leagues ahead of Julian’s. He knows exactly when to pull at the heartstrings after being pushed away. Julian, on the other hand? He just stiffens up and digs in his heels like a stubborn mule.”
With a soft click, Sydney shut the door behind Caleb and handed Tiffany the cake bag, feeling a mix of amusement and exasperation. “He mentioned that we’ll just be ordinary friends from now on. Can you believe that?”
“Ordinary friends?” Tiffany echoed, her eyebrows shooting up in surprise. She peered into the bag, her eyes sparkling with intrigue as her moral compass wavered at the sight of the delectable treats. “Oh, look at this! Cakes, tiramisu, and mille-feuille. Well, if we’re going to be ‘ordinary friends,’ I suppose I can allow it—just for now, of course.”
Sydney couldn’t help but laugh at her friend’s reaction. Just as she was about to reply, Tiffany thrust a generous slice of strawberry cake into her hands, a triumphant grin plastered across her face.
“This one’s your favorite,” Tiffany declared, her eyes glinting with mischief.
It was actually Julian’s favorite. Sydney’s heart fluttered at the thought. He rarely indulged in sweets, but there was that one time when she had savored a slice of strawberry cake, and he had reluctantly taken a few bites. From that moment onward, Sydney had always chosen strawberry cake, hoping to share those sweet moments with him.
Even now, during her pregnancy, Sydney refused to ease her pace. With the drug launch looming ever closer, nearly all her energy was consumed by the lab.
Aside from her clinical hours and the occasional visit to the Hutton estate, she found herself completely immersed in the oversight of the clinical trials.
The threats from Adeline that had echoed outside her home still reverberated in her mind, leaving her in a constant state of unease. She couldn’t allow years of hard work to crumble at this critical juncture.
Settling beside the complex machines, Sydney focused intently on the data processing before her, her brow furrowed in concentration.
