Not waiting for Nadine or Sebastian to answer the question, the waiter rambled on.
"Dining at our restaurant guarantees a fantastic experience. The butternut squash risotto is our signature dish made with the natural sweetness of roasted squash. Rest assured, no added sugar is used, so you can enjoy the dish in its purest form.
"The apricot-glazed chicken is another signature dish of ours. The glaze is made by caramelizing apricot preserves, creating a beautiful golden color. It has a balance of sweetness and tanginess, similar to the flavors found in Northern cuisine. It's definitely worth a try."
Upon being mistaken as a couple, Nadine tried to clarify in a hurry, "We're not—"
But before she could finish, Sebastian interrupted her. "Nadine, I think both dishes sound great. Let's try them. You should order a few dishes you like too, and maybe some sides as well. That should be enough."
Sebastian actually enjoyed being mistaken for a couple. The idea that others saw him and Nadine as lovers lifted his mood, bringing a smile to his face.
The waiter was observant. He could tell that Nadine and Sebastian weren't ordinary people. He knew that they had to be wealthy. So, he eagerly recommended a few more dishes to Nadine.
Behind a screen not too far away, Brad sat alone at his table. He occasionally glanced over at Nadine's table while hiding his lean figure behind the screen.
Brad wanted to rush over and loudly question Nadine about why she was dining with another man. But he had no reason or courage to do so.
After all, Nadine, whom he once thought to be malicious, turned out to be the very opposite. In fact, she had been schemed against by Jean. And Jean, the woman he once believed to be kind, was actually the malicious one, full of lies.
Brad's mind was filled with conflicting emotions—bitterness and jealousy. He was getting restless but could only sit still. If he acted out and confronted Nadine at her table, it would only make her despise him even more.
After over an hour, the meal finally ended. The moment Nadine and Sebastian finished eating, Brad hurried to the cashier to pay the bill. He covered both his and Nadine's tables.
As a result, Brad didn't rush to drive away. Instead, he started the car and sat there waiting for Nadine to reach him.
Panting from all that running, Nadine finally reached Brad. She stood for a moment, catching her breath with her hand on her waist.
Once she had calmed, she faced Brad, who was all smiles. "Mr. Hamilton, how much was the bill?"
The debt of gratitude was something she owed to Sebastian, and it was her responsibility to repay it. She had invited Sebastian to dinner, but the one who paid was Brad. What was that supposed to mean?
Besides, she and Brad were merely ex-husband and ex-wife. They should act like strangers if and when they met. Why was Brad rushing to pay for her meal? What was he trying to do?
Seeing her voluntarily talk to him, Brad's face lit up even more. He responded with great patience, "We're husband and wife. Do we really need to be calculative in such matters?"
