Gratitude and repayment only applied to those with a conscience.
Had Nadine been cold-hearted, she would never have spent all this time caring for Brad in the hospital. However, the fact that she had a conscience didn't mean she had no boundaries or that she would enable Brad.
As soon as Brad put on his sad puppy face, Nadine decided to turn her gaze away from him, refusing to look at the pathetic man any longer. She stayed to take care of him out of guilt, not because he was the one injured.
If it had been a stranger lying in that hospital bed, as long as they had saved her, she would have stayed to take care of them just the same.
However, Brad seemed rather oblivious. Did he really think she was still in love with him? Who did he think he was fooling with these childish games?
Back when she loved him, he was her heart and soul. She would have gone above and beyond to bring him the moon if that was what he wanted. But now that she didn't love him anymore, she wouldn't spare him a second glance, even if he bawled his eyes out.
Brad seriously overestimated his place in her heart.
He lay back down on the hospital bed, his striking eyes focused on Nadine. He wanted to see if there was still a trace of himself in her gaze and if her cold demeanor was a facade.
However, when he noticed the clarity and indifference in her eyes, his heart sank. She truly didn't care about him anymore. The small flicker of hope in his heart vanished, leaving him feeling weak and listless again.
Nadine had been sitting nearby, reviewing documents, when she noticed him calling for his bodyguard to come in. Her gaze shifted toward him in warning. Brad, who was about to have his bodyguard throw the food away, panicked and shoved another big spoonful into his mouth.
The bodyguard, having witnessed the scene, hastily backed out of the room. A wave of regret washed over him. Why did he have to walk in at that moment? Was this spineless man really the same Brad he worked for?
As a patient, Brad had to follow the doctor's advice. Nadine, being a nurse who liked obedient patients, noted that Brad hadn't thrown the food away after all. So, she shot him another glance.
Strangely enough, she still found him—who had once made her heart race—attractive. Her heart even missed a beat.
