Daniel turned Lucas' own words against him, leaving him fuming and speechless for a while. He could only pull the blanket tightly around himself to avoid being exposed.
Unfortunately for Evelyn, the more Lucas pulled, the less she had to cover herself. The middle-aged woman, exposed under the relentless gaze of the ravenous reporters, trembled in fear. Instinctively, she inched closer to Lucas, hoping he would protect her.
But he didn't so much as glance at her. He simply kept pulling the blanket tighter around himself. He pointed at the reporters crowding the bed and barked, "Get the hell out of here! Do you not want to work in Janctera City anymore?
"I'm warning you—if you take one more picture of us, I'll make sure you lose everything!"
Lucas wasn't someone who could be trifled with in Janctera City, and the reporters knew better than to cross him. As soon as his words sank in, they backed off, content with capturing shots from the sidelines rather than shoving their cameras directly into his face.
Lucas breathed a sigh of relief and turned his simmering anger onto Evelyn. "You're in on this with him, aren't you? You two set me up! You conniving bitch!" Ignoring the sea of reporters, he raised his hand and slapped her hard across the face.
Her vision swam, and the metallic taste of blood filled her mouth. After spitting out the blood, she glared at Lucas.
"What the hell are you on about? How could I possibly be in cahoots with Daniel? Don't you know how I feel about him after all these years? If I were really on his side, do you think I'd let myself get dragged into this mess too?"
After tearing into Lucas, she turned to Daniel, pointing at his nose. "Daniel, you heartless bastard, did you ever love me? I raised your kids, gave you a family, and what did I get in return? Have you ever loved me, even for a single day?
For some time now, he had been attempting to convince the Middletons. After all, they were his late wife's parents, and with his partner gone, he felt compelled to consider the elderly couple's feelings.
Moreover, both of the elderly were ill and couldn't handle the stress, so he had to cautiously explain everything to them, afraid of upsetting them.
Daniel had thought it through. As long as Evelyn agreed to sign the divorce agreement and promised to keep her affair with Lucas under wraps, he would give her a substantial sum and send her off to live abroad. He believed this would be a reasonable way to end their marriage.
Little did he know that Evelyn would do this to him.
