Nadine looked at Brad, who was holding her wrist, and couldn't help but chuckle mirthlessly after hearing his question. "You're asking me that? Seriously?"
This was honestly ridiculous. Back when they were married, no matter how many times she called him, he never picked up. Why would she reach out to him after being let down so many times? Why would she continue to warm herself at a fire that never gave her any warmth?
The fact that Brad was asking her this now was absolutely comical. Nadine rolled her eyes at him, turned away, and completely ignored him. Exhausted, she didn't want to deal with Brad any longer.
Why couldn't he just let her go? They were divorced, for goodness sake. Wasn't he supposed to be the cold and aloof type?
Sebastian, who had been watching the whole scene unfold, couldn't stand it any longer. He stepped forward and tried to pry Brad's hand off Nadine's wrist. However, Brad's grip was like iron. No matter how hard he tried, he couldn't free her.
Instead of helping Nadine, he only fueled Brad's anger. "Stay out of this, Sebastian. This is between me and Nadine!"
Brad couldn't stand Sebastian anymore. Nadine had been in trouble, and instead of calling him, she had called Sebastian. That fact alone was enough to prove that there was something more between her and Sebastian.
The mere thought of her ending up with Sebastian drove him wild. He tightened his grip on her wrist, causing Nadine to wince in pain. "What the hell is wrong with you, Brad? Let go of me! You're hurting me!" she yelled, trying to break free from his grip.
"If you knew something wasn't going to work out, would you still do it? When your life's on the line, would you call the person who can save you or the one who'll just hurt you?
"If you hadn't broken Nad's heart, she wouldn't have cut you off!" Sebastian blurted out the harsh truth, looking at Brad like he was an idiot.
Disappointment was a gradual thing. It built slowly—one unanswered call, one broken promise at a time. It might not hurt much at first, but after being rejected a few more times, the other person would never reach out to you anymore.
Brad felt as though his heart had been torn in two. There was a huge hole in his chest, and the cold wind kept rushing in. His lips quivered as he looked at Nadine, his eyes red and heavy with emotion. The light in his gaze vanished in an instant as he stood frozen in place.
