Mr. Norwood listened to his son and felt a wave of guilt wash over him. Thinking back, he realized that since his real granddaughter had come home, he’d never once treated her kindly. He’d always kept his distance, acting cold, constantly finding fault with her and comparing her to Lucinda. He’d made up his mind about her from the start, and it just wasn’t fair.
But she never held it against him. Every single time his life was at risk, she would step up and pull him back from the edge without a word of complaint.
“Cameron, it’s my fault…”
He’d been scared. Scared that once his real granddaughter came back, she’d take all the affection away from Lucinda. Scared that she wouldn’t accept Lucinda and would push her out.
“Dad, Lydia never blamed you, and neither did Kylie or I. As long as you treat Lydia and Lucinda the same from now on, we can be a happy family,” Cameron said gently. He couldn’t stand to see his father weighed down by guilt, especially when he was already so unwell.
Mr. Norwood gave a small nod. He realized that, as a father, he wasn’t nearly as clear-sighted as his own children.
After heading downstairs, Lydia walked toward her own car, while Kylie led Lucinda to the car with the family’s driver.
“Lydia, why don’t you just leave your car here for now? We can have the driver bring it back later. Come with us,” Kylie suggested.
“My car’s just downstairs in the parking garage. You go ahead. I’ll catch up soon.”
Kylie gave her a worried look. “Alright, just drive safe, okay?”
“I will.”
Lydia made her way to the second level of the underground garage. She hadn’t gone far before she heard someone quietly sobbing nearby.
“My poor boy… It’s all that awful Lydia’s fault. If she were really our daughter, Luke could’ve had the surgery two months ago. Why did it have to be dragged out this long? Now he’s getting worse every day. What are we supposed to do?”
Lydia stopped in her tracks, frowning. She recognized the voices — it was Milana and Jenson.
