No matter what, Luke was still her grandson. There was no way she could just stand by and watch while that boy faded away in a hospital bed. As his grandmother, she simply couldn’t bear it.
Lydia didn’t want to make things harder for Mrs. Smith. She let a tiny smile slip onto her lips. “If Sandy agrees to donate a kidney to Luke, I can do the surgery.”
Mrs. Smith felt relieved. She knew Lydia wasn’t cold or heartless.
“Lyds, honestly, they just don’t know how wonderful you are,” Mrs. Smith muttered.
Lydia stayed a little longer to keep her company, but soon it was time to head back to the Capital. Connor was probably still waiting outside.
“Lyds, it’s late. Be careful driving,” Mrs. Smith called after her, not quite ready to let her go.
“I will, Grandma. I’ll come by again in a few days.”
It was over two hundred kilometers to the Capital, but Lydia always drove fast. Coming back to visit didn’t feel that hard.
“You’re always so busy. You really don’t need to keep coming all the way out here just for me.”
“It’s fine. I’ll always make time for you,” Lydia said, hugging her grandmother gently before heading out.
If it were up to her, she’d have brought Mrs. Smith to live in the Capital. But her grandmother liked her life here, so all Lydia could do was remind Marian, the housekeeper, to take good care of her.
Connor finally spotted Lydia coming out of the yard. He hopped out of the car and hurried over to open the door for her.
Lydia lifted an eyebrow. “Aren’t you my driver?”
Connor laughed, reaching out to ruffle her hair. “Thank you.”
If his night vision wasn’t so bad, he’d never let his girl work herself so hard.
Lydia was only teasing, but Connor was being all considerate.
“Sorry, I didn’t tell Grandma those gifts were from you,” she said.
