She might have grown up in the countryside, but she was tired of struggling. If family didn’t mean anything in this world, then why shouldn’t she trade a kidney for half of the family fortune? Honestly, she thought she was being more than fair.
Jenson and Milana stared at her, stunned.
Sandy had a point. If she refused, Luke wouldn’t survive, and if Luke died, she would be the only kid left in the Smith family. She could keep her kidney and, down the line, inherit everything anyway.
It was almost frightening, the way she’d thought it all through.
They never imagined their own daughter could be so calculating.
“Jenson,” Milana whispered, anxiety clear in her eyes.
Jenson’s expression grew darker. They were being cornered by their own daughter. He’d always thought Sandy was the understanding, sensible one.
“Alright,” he said finally, his voice tight. “Your mother and I will split all our shares and personal assets between you and Luke. But your grandmother refuses to let go of her shares. We can’t promise you those.”
Right now, nothing mattered more than saving his son.
Sandy nodded. “I get it. But when Grandma is gone, her shares get split equally between me and Luke too.”
Whatever Luke received, she would have as well.
Jenson clenched his jaw. “Fine.”
“And don’t try to fool me. Everything needs to be handled through the proper legal process, with official witnesses,” she said, looking straight at them.
Sandy might have grown up in a rural village, but she was educated and smart. Her foster father, a compulsive gambler, was always in debt and constantly dragged her into trouble—she’d learned early on to protect herself and understood the law better than most.
Jenson realized he’d really underestimated his own daughter.
He could only nod again, swallowing his frustration. “Fine.”
Meanwhile, Lydia was at the dining table, with Cameron and Kylie piling food into her bowl. Suddenly, Dr. Hady rushed in, looking a little flustered.
“Ma’am.”
