At the Capital’s central police command, rows of officers in uniform stared at the giant screen, all eyes locked on the chaos of an interrogation that felt almost unreal. At the front, a man in his early fifties with a square jaw and stern look—Commissioner Clark, the same one who’d called Officer Byrne—watched with a clenched jaw.
“Find out who this girl is, right now.”
Someone had hacked into the entire Capital police system. That wasn’t something to take lightly.
“Yes, Sir.”
Meanwhile, Connor’s phone buzzed with a message from Mikey, a link attached. Connor didn’t bother opening it. He just sent back a quick voice note. “What is it?”
Mikey’s reply came fast. “Saw it during a meeting with the police. Thought you’d want to see.” The only reason he’d sent it was because the girl’s voice in the video sounded way too much like Lydia.
Connor shot back, “If it’s official business, you don’t need to send it to me.” Ever since he stepped away from that world three years ago, Connor kept his focus on business and stayed clear of anything military or political. If it wasn’t his concern, he didn’t want to know.
Mikey just shook his head, half smiling, half helpless. His brother could be so stubborn. He typed another message. “It’s about Lydia. Up to you.”
The truth was, Lydia never failed to surprise Mikey. Everything from the motorcycle incident showed that she was never just an ordinary girl. Hacking the Country D Embassy’s security, now the entire Capital police system—was there anything she couldn’t do?
Connor paused when he heard Mikey’s last message. Something about Lydia?
He instantly tapped the link.
The screen filled with footage from inside a police station. A burly man in a police uniform waved a baton, his face twisted in anger. “You want our chief to stand up for you? Wh odo you think you are?”
A familiar clear voice cut through the noise. “As the chief of the Fifth Division, isn’t it his job to protect the people? I’m being forced to confess to something I didn’t do. Why shouldn’t I ask him for help?”
