Lydia sat quietly, her face calm and unreadable. There was no hint of pride in her eyes, even though everyone now knew who she was. She just watched as Corbyn’s legs gave out and he ended up sitting on the floor, his back against the table, staring at her in shock.
“This can’t be real. No way…” he kept mumbling, his voice barely above a whisper.
How could the legendary hacker L be a young girl? It made no sense.
Three years ago, when she became a legend in the hacking world, she was only fifteen. At fifteen, she’d already achieved what most people couldn’t manage in their entire lives. How was she even capable of that?
Corbyn just kept repeating, “Impossible… This isn’t possible…” He looked totally lost, like his mind couldn’t handle what he was seeing.
“Take him out of here,” Officer Byrne said, signaling the waiting officers. They came over and helped Corbyn to his feet, leading him out of the room while he continued to mutter to himself.
Officer Byrne’s whole demeanor changed as he turned to Lydia. He actually smiled, kind and warm, like a dad looking at his favorite kid. Lydia was the same age as his own son, but his boy was nothing but trouble. Lydia, though, was different. She was gifted, smart, beautiful, and so well-behaved. Her talents were honestly hard to believe.
He’d always wished she would agree to be his goddaughter, but she’d said no and he couldn’t do much about that.
“Lydia, Mitch mentioned you were in the Capital a few days ago. I was hoping to invite you over for dinner with the family, and here you are,” he said, still smiling.
Mitch was the deputy chief. Lydia had reached out to him online a while back when she needed help with Henry.
Lydia nodded politely. “I’ll come by to see you and your wife when I have the chance.”
Officer Byrne’s smile grew even wider. “That would be wonderful. My wife will be thrilled.”
