“That makes sense,” Garrett said, nodding. Then his expression changed and he shot Connor a look. “But seriously, isn’t it a little much for Connor to be making a move on my sister right in front of our house?”
That was pure big brother energy. He hadn’t even had a chance to really meet his own sister yet, and Connor was already trying to get close to her.
When the car headlights swept over them, Connor quickly let go of Lydia and stepped in front of her, almost like he was trying to shield her. He glanced up and recognized the car right away. It was the one her parents always drove. Suddenly he felt a little awkward, almost guilty.
Garrett got out of the car first, giving Connor a look that was definitely not friendly. “Mr. Jefferson, what exactly are you doing here?”
Connor was a few years older than Garrett and used to treat him like a kid. But now, facing Garrett ’s suspicion, he couldn’t even come up with a comeback. The thought flashed through his mind that if things went well, Garrett might be his brother-in-law someday.
Before Connor could say anything, Lydia peeked out from behind him.
For a second, both Garrett and Lydia just stared at each other.
“What?”
“What?”
Garrett was the first to react, his eyes wide with shock. “Wait… you’re my sister?”
Lydia blinked and then broke into a smile. What were the odds? The person she’d just been in surgery with, the one everyone called a genius, turned out to be her brother. No wonder Dr. Donley had looked so shocked when he saw Garrett’s credentials. He must have put it all together.
“Garrett,” Lydia said with a bright grin as she stepped out from behind Connor.
