Lydia shook her head right away. “No, Garrett , really, I don’t need it. I have some cash, and Mom and Dad gave me more than enough. You should keep your money.”
Garrett looked hurt. “Is it not enough? I have another card, if you want. You can have both.”
“That’s not it, Garrett. I promise, I have plenty.”
“What I give you is from me. If you don’t take it, I’ll just think you think it’s not enough.”
Lydia could tell he wouldn’t back down. She sighed and took the card. “Thanks. I’ll keep it then.”
Garrett’s mood did a complete one-eighty. He smiled and reached over to pat her head, gentle as ever. “Good. Get some sleep. I’ll see you tomorrow.”
“See you tomorrow.”
Once Garrett was gone, a figure stepped out from the curve of the staircase. Lucinda. Her hands were clenched so tightly that her knuckles went white, jaw locked, her whole face twisted with anger.
This was just too much. Garrett had already brought Lydia a mountain of gifts, and now he’d gone behind everyone’s backs and handed her a card loaded with fifty million? Sure, Garrett got her gifts too, but never that many at once. He’d given her spending money, but the most she’d ever gotten was ten million, sometimes just a few million. Now, without even blinking, he’d handed Lydia fifty million.
So this was the difference. Blood really did matter more.
She stomped her foot, hard enough that the sound echoed, and then winced, realizing how loud it was. She quickly slipped back into her room, trying to be as quiet as possible.
Down in the living room, Kylie glanced up at the stairs, a thoughtful look on her face. She turned to Cameron. “Honey, have you noticed? Lucinda isn’t quite herself lately.”
