Connor was glued to Lydia’s side, always hovering close like some kind of guardian angel. The way he looked at her, so soft and full of affection, made Lucinda’s jealousy burn hot. She could hardly stand it.
Connor had never once looked at her like that.
Why did Lydia get to have all of his attention?
She forced a smile. “Garrett, since Lydia and Connor are coming to see you off, I want to go too.” She just needed more time near Connor. That was all she wanted.
Garrett just laughed. “It’s okay. The two of them are enough. You should stay here and look after Grandpa. I wouldn’t dare take away his favorite granddaughter.”
Lucinda’s heart twisted, but her smile didn’t slip. “It’s fine. Mom and Dad are here too. I’ll come back after I see you off.”
Connor’s voice cut in, cold and direct. “Lydia and I have somewhere to be after this. We won’t have time to bring you home. If you have anything to say to Garrett, now’s your chance.”
He didn’t want Lucinda tagging along and ruining the mood. Not a chance.
Lucinda’s expression faltered, embarrassment flashing over her face before she managed to cover it up. Garrett just patted her shoulder gently. “Don’t worry. If you ever want to talk, you can just call me, alright?”
Her hands curled into fists at her sides, but she forced out a smile. “Okay. Safe travels.”
On the way to the airport, Lydia drove. Garrett didn’t hesitate to call shotgun, leaving Connor alone in the backseat.
“Lydia, they still haven’t found the person behind all of this. Please be careful,” Garrett reminded her, voice serious.
Someone had already died to keep the truth hidden. This was no small thing.
Lydia nodded. “I know, Garrett. I’ll be careful, I promise.”
Garrett raised his voice a little, making sure Connor could hear. “And if someone bullies you, or makes you upset, you tell me. I’ll find someone who can cheer you up.”
Connor didn’t say anything from the back, just silently watching.
Lydia couldn’t help but laugh. “Okay. I got it.”
At the airport, Connor tried to take Garrett’s luggage, but Garrett waved him off, grabbing it himself and thanking him. He turned to Lydia with a grin. “Lydia, put your hand here. Let’s take a picture. I want to send it to the group chat and make the others jealous.”
