Grace used to think that once Connor realized Lydia was just a country girl, he’d lose interest for sure.
But Lydia wasn’t your average country girl. She was smart. She knew how to play the game.
She’d only been back for a little while and already had everyone on her side.
There was no way Lucinda could beat her when it came to Connor. Honestly, it would be smarter to try for something else.
Lucinda’s hopes crashed hard at Grace’s words. She buried her face in the sofa and started to sob, her whole body shaking with heartbreak.
She felt completely alone, like a princess toppled from her throne, left behind by everyone.
Grace couldn’t help but feel a pang of sympathy seeing Lucinda so torn up.
But some things, once they happened, were impossible to undo.
“Lucinda, if the other rich guys don’t interest you and you’re set on being a Jefferson, you could always pick between Mikey and Chris.”
Lucinda stopped crying, just like that. She looked up at Grace with tears streaming down her cheeks. “You want me to choose from what’s left after Lydia?”
Grace shook her head. “They’re not leftovers. Connor picked Lydia, so Mikey and Chris never even had a chance. Besides, before Connor and Lydia met, Chris and Lydia actually got along pretty well, didn’t they?”
It stung, but it was the truth. Lydia was in high demand now.
Lucinda frowned. “But… I don’t like Chris. He’s just a college kid who hasn’t done anything with his life. All he cares about are motorcycles and street racing. He’s just a troublemaker.”
Chris was the last person Lucinda could ever see herself with.
She liked men like Connor. Tall, good-looking, impressive. The kind of guy who could take charge of anything, who would still be someone important even without the Jefferson name.

Every chapter is missing a sentence from the end of every chapter. It’s frustrating to try guess what’s missing or said...
