Chris just stood there, looking completely lost.
This was definitely not how things were supposed to go.
His teammates didn’t look any happier. With Connor riding alongside them, it felt like they had a drill sergeant breathing down their necks.
Lydia glanced over at everyone. “Focus on riding, but safety comes first. Show me what you can really do.”
Everyone nodded, a little nervous but ready.
At Chris’s call, the seven motorcycles revved up and tore out together, side by side, like a pack of wild horses let loose on the open road.
The engines roared so loud the air seemed to vibrate. Every rider leaned forward, hands gripping tight, eyes locked ahead. For a moment, it was hard to tell where the riders ended and their bikes began. They moved as one, all speed and adrenaline.
They jostled for the lead, sometimes neck and neck, sometimes one surging ahead, the wheels spinning so fast they kicked up a thick cloud of dust. It hung behind them like a trail of smoke after a battle.
Up on a lookout point by a bend in the canyon, an old man in a tweed cap and dark gray suit watched through binoculars, practically bouncing with excitement. “Look at that! Lydia is so cool!”
It was Mr. Jefferson, of course.
He’d been bored at home until Chris mentioned the evening ride and picnic with Lydia, and he’d instantly decided to come along. Below him, a group of staff was already busy setting up for the picnic.
At first, Lydia hung back, just watching everyone. Then, after a while, she cranked the throttle and shot from the very back straight to the front of the pack.
Chris, who’d been leading, let out a frustrated curse and pushed harder, but there was no catching up.
Lydia’s riding skills were just in a league of their own.
Mr. Jefferson nearly doubled over laughing as he watched through his binoculars.

Every chapter is missing a sentence from the end of every chapter. It’s frustrating to try guess what’s missing or said...
