Scar looked stunned. “I didn’t expect that girl to be so good at what she does.”
The Shadow Doctor glanced at him. “If you ever call her in again, let me know first.”
Scar realized bringing Lydia had been a smart move after all. He nodded right away. “You got it.”
The Shadow Doctor turned to Night Eagle. “If you can convince her to join us, she could bring Black Eagle benefits we never even imagined.”
Night Eagle understood exactly what he was getting at. The Shadow Doctor was getting old and wouldn’t be able to keep going much longer, but after all these years, he still hadn’t found anyone worthy of taking his place.
“I get what you mean.”
The Shadow Doctor nodded. “Good. Don’t let this chance slip by.”
Before heading back to Mount Gemspire, Lydia made everyone go through several rounds of decontamination. After that, she went shopping for medical supplies, planning to work on an antidote.
Potato, Sweet Potato, and the others were used to Lydia’s routines by now, but Damien was completely blown away. No wonder the boss was so taken with her. She was so young, yet so talented. How did she manage to learn all this? It was true what they said. Anyone who could catch Connor’s eye was never going to be ordinary.
Connor had been waiting for Lydia by the gates of the mountain. Three hours had gone by and still no sign of her. He was just about to round up a team and head down the mountain to look for her when he finally spotted a familiar car coming up the road.
“Lydia!”
She got out and shrugged at him. “See? I’m fine.”
Connor couldn’t help himself. He pulled her into a hug, letting out a long breath. “I just couldn’t stop worrying.”
Lydia lifted her gaze to meet his. “You know I’m not like other girls.”
Most girls would have been terrified to go to Black Eagle on their own. It wasn’t exactly a friendly place. Her words hit Connor right in the heart. She was right. She wasn’t ordinary. She was made for something more.
“With me, you can just relax and be a normal girl,” he said quietly.
His words made something stir deep inside Lydia, gentle ripples spreading across her usually calm heart. He always knew just how to reach her softest spot.
“I’ll try my best,” she said softly.
