Mrs. Smith shook her head gently. “Don’t worry about me, dear. I’m fine. Are you Lyds’…”
Connor jumped in right away. “Yes, I’m Lydia’s driver. She’s been super busy lately, and she flew to France tonight. She asked me to come check on you. I didn’t expect…” His words faded and his gaze turned icy. He still couldn’t believe Jenson and Milana would actually hurt their own mother. If Lydia ever found out, there’s no way she would let them off easy.
Just the mention of Lydia brought a little light back to Mrs. Smith’s tired, teary eyes. “That girl… she’s always running around, too busy. Don’t tell her about all this. Let her do her thing. I don’t want her worrying because of me.”
Jenson and Milana had been dropping by a lot lately, trying to sweet-talk her, but she’d always managed to send them away. Today, they must have really snapped, showing their true colors at last.
“Maybe I should call Lydia and ask if I can take you to the Capital. It’s not safe for you here on your own. They’re probably going to come back, and next time could be worse.” Connor’s voice was quiet, but firm. He knew Jenson and Milana weren’t done. They’d come back. People like that never gave up easily.
Mrs. Smith just shook her head again. “I’ll be alright here. They wouldn’t dare do anything truly unforgivable. They still want me to change my will.” She managed a wry smile. “Besides, that fool managed to stab himself. Judging by the wound, he’ll need at least a week to heal, and Milana’s face is so swollen she’ll be hiding for days.”
Connor still didn’t feel right about it. He thought for a moment. “How about I leave two people here to keep you safe? They’ll stay out of your way, and no one else will even notice them. If you’re in any danger, they’ll be there.”
Mrs. Smith looked at Connor, a little surprised by how considerate he was. The more she studied him, the more she realized he didn’t seem like an ordinary driver or bodyguard at all. There was something about him, something special.
After Lydia moved in with the Norwood family, Mrs. Smith hadn’t tried to find out much about them. As long as Lydia told her she was happy, that was enough. But this man… this “driver”… he just didn’t fit the picture.
“Are you really Lyds’ driver?” she asked softly. The last time he’d visited, she’d thought he was far too handsome and carried himself with so much dignity. Now she was certain.
