Emily was one of them. She never expected to see Mr. Jefferson again, let alone like this. He was lying on a stretcher, badly wounded, and all she could think was that maybe this was her chance. Her chance to get close to him.
She pictured it all so clearly. She would save him in the operating room. He would recover in the hospital, and during those long days, something would spark between them. They’d fall in love, go through ups and downs together, and eventually walk down the aisle. Just as that fantasy started to take shape in her mind, Lydia showed up and ruined everything.
How could Emily possibly be happy now?
“Can you even handle this surgery?” Lydia’s voice was icy as she glanced at Emily.
Emily hesitated, but quickly lifted her chin. “I’m the surgical assistant. Dr. Louis is the lead. He knows what he’s doing. This isn’t your place right now, so you should leave.”
Lydia’s lips curled into a smirk. “If I walk out, are you really going to save him?”
Dr. Louis had barely managed to hold himself together before, but now Lydia’s blunt question made him flush with embarrassment and frustration. He snapped, “Young lady, we’re in the middle of a critical operation. If you keep interrupting, you’ll only make things worse. Are you prepared to take responsibility for that?”
Emily jumped in, her voice sharp. “Exactly. You’re just trying to make trouble and slow us down. Why are you really here?”
“You’re seriously getting in the way of this surgery. Leave now,” another doctor chimed in.
Dr. Louis actually felt relieved. He was out of his depth with this procedure, and if this girl’s interference delayed things, well, at least he wouldn’t get all the blame. Truth was, Mr. Jefferson had shown up out of nowhere tonight, and the hospital’s most skilled surgeons weren’t around. The responsibility had landed on him.
He was good at his job, or he wouldn’t have become a professor, but Connor’s wound was in such a difficult spot. One wrong move and the whole surgery could fail. How could he live with that?
Lydia’s voice cut through his thoughts. “Are you sure you’ll save him if I leave?”
Dr. Louis looked away, feeling exposed. “What are you getting at? You think you can save him?”
