“I swore an oath to Blood Oath. I was born with them, and I’ll die with them. I’m not the kind of person who betrays my own.”
Lydia turned her back on him. “Then we have nothing left to talk about. If you lay a finger on him, I won’t let it go.”
Iceblade stood out on the balcony, quiet and alone. He opened his mouth as if to say something, but then just swallowed it down. Watching Lydia leave, he finally spoke up. “Blood Oath has issued the highest kill order. The target is Connor.”
Then he disappeared into the night.
Lydia’s heart clenched. She wasn’t the type to shy away from trouble, but a kill order from Blood Oath was a whole other level. Once it’s out, the target has to die, no matter what. It’s the group’s way of showing ultimate power. Every single assassin, every resource, would be thrown at this job until it was done.
No wonder Iceblade said he would sit this one out. All Blood Oath’s elites were after Connor tonight. Iceblade just hadn’t acted yet.
With the shape Connor was in, if Iceblade had made a move…
Lydia fell silent.

At three in the morning, Connor woke up to a stabbing pain in his chest. It felt like someone had ripped his heart out.
Outside the ICU, Lydia jolted upright as soon as she heard the monitor start beeping. She quickly pulled on a sterile gown and hurried inside. Chris rushed to get his own gown on, following right after.
“Connor!”
Connor blinked awake, and the first thing he saw was Lydia’s eyes above her mask, watching him closely. For a second, it felt like all the pain faded away. His heart felt weirdly light, almost happy. It was a strange, almost magical feeling.
“Lydia…” His voice came out rough and scratchy.
Lydia cut him off. “Shhh. You just woke up. You’re still really weak.”
“With you here, I’m not going anywhere,” Connor managed.
Lydia rolled her eyes, half exasperated, half relieved. “If you keep pushing yourself like this, even I couldn’t save you.”
