Lydia’s brows pulled together. “How did the wound split open when it was healing just fine?”
Aiden’s heart thudded as he fumbled for words. Connor just watched him, cold and silent, like he might snap if Aiden said anything wrong.
“Um, he… he insisted on going to the bathroom by himself. He wouldn’t let anyone help. Not long after he came out, the wound started bleeding again. It’s a lot, honestly. Should I take a picture so you can see how bad it is?”
Aiden was so desperate to prove he wasn’t making it up that he even offered to send a photo.
Lydia raised an eyebrow. So it was real? The wound had really opened?
“No need for all that. Just call a doctor and have them re-dress it. I’ll come back and check on him tonight.”
Aiden hesitated. “But… what if…?”
“Even if I left for the Capital right now, it’d take me an hour to get there. Are you really going to stand there and watch him bleed the whole time?”
By now, Lydia had a pretty good idea what was going on. Someone was jealous again. The wound she’d dressed so carefully wouldn’t just split open for no reason. Probably one of Connor’s people had ratted her out, and now Connor was making a scene.
Aiden realized she was right. He glanced at Connor for help. Connor just gave him a small nod, and Aiden finally let out the breath he’d been holding. Thank goodness, this job was exhausting.
“Alright, Lydia. We’ll wait for you. Drive safe.”
Connor shot Aiden a quick approving look, clearly pleased he’d picked up on things so fast.
Lydia knew Connor was faking it to get her attention, but since he’d already played the sympathy card, she had to go along with it.
She nodded. “Okay.”
After she hung up, Mrs. Smith looked at her with concern. “Did Connor get hurt?”
Lydia nodded. “Yeah.”
