Connor walked over with a confidence that filled the whole space, every step steady and sure. He looked like he owned the place, like some kind of royalty who knew exactly how important he was. And here was this kid, Lincoln, actually trying to steal his girl right in front of him. Was he looking for trouble?
“You're from the Lowe family?” Connor asked.
Lincoln. The only son the Lowe family had, treated like a treasure since the day he was born. Three years ago, before Connor left the military, the Lowes had sent Lincoln off for army training. He lasted three days before he broke down, begging to go home. His mom finally couldn’t take it and called Mr. Lowe in tears. Next thing anyone knew, Lincoln was back in his cushy life.
Connor remembered him, of course. And now that same kid was trying to get between him and Lydia? Unbelievable.
Just that one sentence from Connor, “You're from the Lowe family?”, was enough to make Lincoln nearly lose it. He ducked behind Lydia on pure instinct, forgetting all about pride.
“Mr... Mr. Jefferson...” His voice shook, and he looked ready to bolt. But something inside him, maybe the tiniest bit of dignity, told him not to run. This wasn't the army anymore, and Connor wasn’t his commanding officer. He didn’t have to be scared. That’s what he told himself, anyway. But his legs weren’t listening. They were shaking, and he could barely stand straight.
The whole truth was, Connor had left Lincoln with some serious trauma back in the day. Even after Connor retired, Lincoln did his best to avoid him at all costs. Like tonight. Connor hated big events and crowds, so even though he gave plenty to charity, he almost never showed up in person. Lincoln thought he was safe. No way Connor would be here.
He never expected Connor would be waiting outside.
Connor watched Lincoln hiding behind Lydia and frowned. “Step out here.”
Lincoln looked like he was about to cry as he shuffled out from behind Lydia. “Sir, what are you doing here?”
Connor didn’t bother softening up. He kept his face cold and steady. “Weren’t you just saying you’re a hundred times better than me? And now you’re asking why I’m here?”
Lincoln had been so shocked to see Connor that he’d forgotten everything he’d said just minutes ago. Now that Connor repeated it, Lincoln’s mouth fell open. What was happening? What did this even mean?
“You... you two...” Lincoln glanced from Connor to Lydia, completely lost. Wasn’t Connor supposed to be engaged to Lucinda Norwood? Had he mixed things up?

Every chapter is missing a sentence from the end of every chapter. It’s frustrating to try guess what’s missing or said...
