“A fall on flat ground can be serious for someone her age. But down the stairs? That’s a whole other story.”
“Everything just fits together a little too perfectly,” Connor said.
He had already questioned the two bodyguards on duty that night. Neither of them heard anything strange when Mrs. Smith fell. Maybe it was just the thunderstorm outside, drowning out any other sound.
Lydia had checked the security footage herself. It all played out the way Sandy had described. Mrs. Smith felt sorry for her and called her upstairs. Sandy went up, looking happy. Then, right after she climbed the stairs, the power went out. A few minutes later, Mrs. Smith tumbled down.
Whatever happened in those dark minutes, only Mrs. Smith and Sandy really knew.
Lydia and Connor made their way back to the Capital. When they arrived, Milana and Jenson were already at the hospital, trying to see Mrs. Smith, but the security guards wouldn’t let them in.
As soon as Lydia walked in, Milana glared at her, voice full of outrage. “Lydia, what’s your problem? We’re her son and daughter-in-law. Who gave you the right to keep us out?”
There was a wild, tired look in Lydia’s eyes. She looked like she hadn’t slept all night, her anger simmering just beneath the surface. “Where were you yesterday?” Her voice was cold. “You just show up now?”
Jenson’s face fell. He couldn’t meet her eyes.

Every chapter is missing a sentence from the end of every chapter. It’s frustrating to try guess what’s missing or said...
