Everyone below sat in silence, their faces tense. Lieutenant General Jackson had racked up plenty of honors, and soon he’d be promoted to General.
Still, Connor was a living legend in the military.
Three years ago, General Jefferson was supposed to be promoted, but he asked to wait until after his mission. Nobody expected what happened next. He finished the job, but his injuries were so bad he had to retire. If not for that, he’d have been in charge by now.
“Sir, General Jefferson has already stepped down. With your record, there’s no one more qualified for this position than you,” Jackson’s right-hand man, Harvey, stood up and saluted with complete respect.
Jackson knew most of the men in the room had been trained by Connor, but he didn’t care. Soon, he’d take the top spot. He’d make sure everyone saw who was truly the most capable.

Milana and Jenson were under arrest. They didn’t deny any of the charges, but both did everything they could to protect Sandy. Milana, especially, seemed like a different person, taking all the blame herself.
“It was all me. Jenson had no idea what I was doing,” she said. “Mrs. Smith had a son, but she insisted on leaving everything to Lydia. I hated her for that, so I came up with the whole plan.”
“At first, Sandy just wanted the old lady to help her get an apprenticeship with Miracle Hands. But she said no. When Sandy was ready to give up, I kept pushing her, told her to ask every day. The old lady’s actually pretty soft-hearted. I figured if she saw Sandy kneeling in the rain, she wouldn’t be able to ignore her.”
Byron’s voice was low. “You checked the weather and knew it would rain?”
Milana nodded. “That’s right. Out in Lakeview Town, when there’s a thunderstorm, the power usually goes out. Mrs. Smith couldn’t get around well. If the floor got wet, it’d be really easy for her to fall. Sure enough, she felt bad for Sandy and let her in. Sandy was soaked, tracked water everywhere, and Mrs. Smith slipped on the stairs. Sandy’s a good person. She called for help right away. If she’d wanted to hurt her, she could have just left her there.”
