Nathaniel knew Larry all too well. The guy loved making a big deal out of nothing, always complicating things that should have been simple. Honestly, it was exhausting.
“What are you doing here? My mom’s still getting her acupuncture. Ever heard of privacy? Or do you want my dad to come out swinging a knife at you?” Nathaniel cracked the door open just enough to glare at him.
Larry noticed Nathaniel standing there looking perfectly fine, and didn’t hear any frantic breathing from inside. He froze, totally stunned. “Did that girl really stabilize Mrs. Robinson’s condition?”
Nathaniel nodded. “Yeah. My mom’s fine now. Tell the ambulance to leave.”
Larry still looked skeptical. “But...”
“Larry, I’m alright. Let the ambulance go,” Mabel’s weak voice came from inside before he could finish. That finally convinced Larry that Lydia had actually pulled it off.
Larry was still standing there like a statue and Nathaniel just shut the door right in his face.
From behind the door, Larry could hear Nathaniel’s relief spill out. “Mom, you’re finally okay! You scared me half to death, you know?”
Mabel was feeling a lot better now. She managed a tired little laugh. “Scared you? I’m still here, aren’t I?”
She turned to Lydia, her eyes soft and grateful. “Sweetheart, thank you. Without your help, I really think I wouldn’t have made it.”
Before Lydia came, Mabel had honestly thought she was done for. The attack felt exactly like the one she’d had a few years back, sudden and overwhelming, leaving her no time to catch her breath. Last time, she’d spent hours fighting for her life in the ER. She never imagined she’d be lucky enough to meet Lydia, who could make that suffocating feeling disappear in just a couple of minutes.
Nathaniel didn’t like hearing his mom talk like that. “Mom, don’t say that kind of unlucky stuff. Seriously. Promise me you won’t talk like that again.”
Mabel just smiled. “I mean it, Nate. This girl saved my life today. You and your dad need to make sure you thank her properly.” The message was clear. She expcted them to repay Lydia for what she’d done.
Nathaniel nodded. “Don’t worry, Mom. Dad and I will make sure we do.”
