As soon as Kylie asked that, Lucinda felt her heart jump straight into her throat.
Did her aunt and uncle already know Lydia was the real Norwood daughter? She remembered that strange call from Nathaniel a while back. Was it because of Lydia? If the Robinson family already knew the truth, would everyone in the Capital soon be gossiping that she was never the real daughter?
The more she thought about it, the more afraid she felt. Her face went pale, and she could barely keep her hands from shaking.
Lately, she’d been trying to talk herself into being okay with all of this. Even if the truth came out, she was still the daughter the Norwoods recognized. But was that enough? Was it really true?
“Erm, no. Aunt Mabel wasn’t doing well at all. Lydia was busy taking care of her, so there wasn’t a chance for any family introductions,” Elliot said.
Kylie just nodded. “Alright, then. When there’s a chance, I’ll tell them myself.”
Lucinda felt the tension leave her body all at once. She slumped into the sofa, completely drained. She hadn’t realized just how much she cared about being the Norwood family’s real daughter until now.
Lydia, on the other hand, had no idea what exactly had happened between the Norwoods and the Robinsons. But from what the Robinson family’s driver said earlier, it sounded like things were really tense between the two families.
“Elliot, are the Norwoods and the Robinsons really on such bad terms?”
She usually didn’t care about other people’s drama, but this was about her mom, so she had to ask.
Elliot let out a tired sigh. “Well, our grandpa is super traditional. He’s got a temper just like our uncle. Stubborn doesn’t even begin to cover it. The Robinsons are old school, military and political types. Our great-grandparents were war heroes. Back then, they were really strict about marriage. Grandpa wanted Mom to marry someone from a family on their level, but she went to college and fell for Dad, who had nothing.
“Grandpa and Uncle did everything to stop her, but Mom wouldn’t budge. In the end, they didn’t even show up to her wedding. I heard that when we were born, no one from the Robinson family came either, except Grandma and Aunt Mabel, who snuck over a couple of times.”
