They were busy getting everything ready for Lydia and Lucinda’s new school year, running around for supplies and all the little things they might need.
Lydia herself barely had a minute to spare. She was getting used to running Smith Corporation after just taking over, figuring out which school Luke should go to, staying on top of work, and still making time to help Connor with his eye treatments. Every single day felt full to the brim.
One morning at breakfast, Lydia finished her milk in a few gulps, grabbed some toast, and was halfway to the door when Kylie called her back. “Lydia, if you don’t want to live in the school dorms, you really don’t have to. If the commute feels too long, we could always get you and Lucinda a little house near campus for the school year.”
Capital Med School and Capital College were basically neighbors, just separated by one street, and the area was surrounded by universities. Plenty of students with well-off families didn’t bother with dorms, choosing instead to buy or rent apartments nearby.
Kylie had already checked with Lucinda, who seemed fine with the idea.
Lucinda couldn’t stand the thought of dorm life. Sharing a tiny room with three other people, plus one bathroom for everyone, sounded unbearably cramped.
But Lydia shook her head right away. “I’ll stay in the dorms. It’s just easier.”
Once classes started, she figured she’d be spending most of her time in the lab anyway. No point in wasting precious minutes running back and forth.
And living with Lucinda in a townhouse? That was never going to happen.
Lucinda hadn’t expected her to shoot the idea down so quickly and frowned. “Are you sure you’ll be comfortable in the dorms, Lydia? Getting a place near campus isn’t that different, really.”
Lydia just nodded. “I’ll be fine.”
Lucinda was at a loss for words, fuming inside.
Lydia is definitely doing this on purpose, she thought. Just because she grew up in the middle of nowhere, she wants to drag me down with her and make me live in a dorm too.
