Lucinda blushed as she smiled. “We… well, we’ve been engaged since we were kids, but honestly, he’s always busy. We barely see each other.”
She had already figured out what to say if her classmates ever asked about her and Connor. Even if Lydia was with Connor now, who could say what might happen in a year, or two, or five? She and Lydia were only eighteen. Anything could change before they actually got married. If everyone already thought Connor was her fiancé, why bother denying it?
Lucinda’s shy look made the other three girls burst out laughing in a way only close friends could.
“Mr. Jefferson might be busy, but he has to make time for his fiancée, right?”
“Yeah, Lucinda, if he comes to see you, you have to let us sneak a peek. I want to see just how good looking he is.”
“Same here. I’m dying to know what the famous Jefferson heir looks like in real life.”
Lucinda’s cheeks turned even redder as they teased her. “Stop it. I’m still a student. It’s just an arrangement for now. We don’t really hang out much. But if I ever get the chance, I’ll have him treat you all to a nice dinner.”
That sent the three of them into a fit of excited squeals.
Lucinda lowered her eyes. If it weren’t for Lydia, Connor would be hers. She wouldn’t have to make up stories just to protect her dignity in front of her classmates.
Meanwhile, Lydia hung up on Connor and saw she’d just been added to the class group chat by her advisor. The chat was already blowing up with messages.
[Starlight]: Oh my god, no way, are we really in the same class as Daisy, the medical genius?
[TeaLover]: Yeah, I saw her today. She’s honestly so pretty.
[CrystalClear]: I think I saw Lydia, the national top scorer, when I was signing in.

Every chapter is missing a sentence from the end of every chapter. It’s frustrating to try guess what’s missing or said...
